There’s not much to do in Vientiane. I bought a ticket for a VIP bus to Vang Vieng in the morning for $6 USD. The bus leaves around 2:30 PM and picking up from guest houses starts at 2:00 PM.

Around Vientiane

I had a couple of hours free so I drove to the Buddha Park. It’s located thirty kilometers from the city. On the way you have to go back to the Friendship Bridge, the same place where the border with Thailand is located, and keep driving for seven more kilometers. If you come to Laos from this border, you should save yourself the trouble and ask the driver to go through this park first.

The road goes through a rural area along rice fields, cows that walk on the road and the river to the right. The roads are not good in some parts.

That day I went looking after the Long Neck Karen tribes. I rode on a motorcycle in the lovely Mae Hong Son area. I visited a small natural park and kept riding toward Huay Sua Tao village on a road crossed by streams of water, which later on turned into a trail loaded with dust and sand. I checked a hot spring and a waterfall, after which I took a turn from the main road to watch local women working in rice fields and drove to a remote village far in the mountains.

I woke up late at 9:00 AM and took a shower. There is hot water but you have to take a course in order to make them work. This was the first time I’ve seen a boiler operated by gas. First, you have to get outside to open the gas faucet. Next you need to turn two buttons on a device that has four different buttons whose reason for existence is unknown. The advantage of a gas boiler unlike other electric boilers is that the water are not just warm, but hot. This is much better.

The day after the hospital I visited a fishermen floating village for a few hours. The village floats on a lake, thirty minutes drive from Siem Reap. I still had a soar throat but I wanted to do something that day. A tuktuk driver picked me in the afternoon for a 4$ fee. It’s a thirty minutes ride which goes through a bumpy dirt road and I didn’t want to do it on a motorcycle.

The way to the lake is mostly not interesting, although in some parts you can see green rice fields.

באותו יום יצאתי לשני אתרים גדולים באזור אנשון (מחוז גווידז’ואו) – מפל חואנגואושו ומערת ארמון הדרקון (מערת לונגונג). עד לאותו יום המחוז לא היווה עבורי אטרקציה גדולה. הוא שימש בעיקר כנקודת מעבר בין מחוז סיצ’ואן למחוז גואנגש’י, בו נמצאים גווילין ויאנגשואו.

בהתאם להמלצת בעלי המלון שבו שהיתי באנשון (חדר חביב עם שרותים צמודים ומקלחת עם מים חמים ב-50 יואן, לאחר מיקוח קל), כל אחד מהאתרים הצריך יום שלם, אך מכיוון שהייתי קצר בזמן רציתי לאחד בין האתרים. ממדריך הלונלי פלנט הבנתי שהדבר אפשרי ושיש מיניבוס העובר בין האתרים, נתון שהתברר בהמשך כשגוי.

בעל המלון המליץ להגיע קודם למפל חואנגאושו, האתר “הגדול” מבין השניים, משם אוכל להמשיך במיניבוס למערת ארמון הדרקון (לונגונג דונג), “הקטן” מבינהם.

באותו יום חזרתי לאתר מערת ארמון הדרקון כדי לעלות בשנית על האומגות הענקיות ולעבור בנחת על “מאורת הדרקון” היפהפיה. לאחר החזרה לכפר יצאתי רגלית לכיוון ההפוך. עברתי בשדות אורז מקסימים, עזרתי למקומיים לחבוט בגבעולי התבואה, ולאחר שיט על הנהר המשכתי ברגל על שביל לא מסומן באזור ביצות מדהים שצמוד לאתר מערות ארמון הדרקון. בשעה האחרונה ליווה אותי דייג מקומי שסיפר לי על הטיולים שלו בסין.

את מרבית חלקי אתר מערת ארמון הדרקון, הלא היא לונגונג דונג, כבר ראיתי ביום הקודם. התעוררתי מוקדם בבוקר ונכנסתי בחזרה אל אתר המערות מהכפר שבו ישנתי. מכיוון שהכפר נמצא בתוך האתר אפילו לא הייתי צריך לרכוש כרטיס נוסף (128 יואן, 68 לסטודנטים).

הלכתי בחזרה לכיוון האומגות. לא הספיק לי מה שעשיתי אתמול ורציתי להשלים את החסר. אדם מקומי התלווה אלי להליכה והגיע איתי עד לאומגות. המעבר ב “מאורת הדרקון” המדהימה הוא בונוס נוסף. לאחר המאורה, עברנו במערת גואניין, שהיא מעין כוך ענקי בתוך ההר שבתוכו מקדש ונזירים.

באותו יום נסעתי מקאילי אל הכפר לאנגדה. בטרק רגלי הגעתי אל שני חלקי הכפר המרוחקים זה מזה, ומשם במסלול לא מסומן דרך ההרים הסובבים. תפסתי טרמפ על הכביש הראשי עד לכפר קטן בדרך, ומשם על אופנוע אל ליישאן ובחזרה לקאילי.

אוטובוס שיוצא לעיתים תדירות מקאילי אל ליישאן עוצר בכפר לאנגדה כעבור שעת נסיעה. המחיר 9 יואן.

הכפר לאנגדה מחולק לשני חלקים. החלק שני מרוחק כחצי שעת הליכה מהראשון.

החלק הראשון, בו עוצר האוטובוס, הוא די קטן. בתי עץ מסורתיים נראים מכל עבר. על חלונותיהם תלויים פלפלים חריפים ותירסים מיובשים שמעניקים להם גוון מיוחד.

Xijiang. There are about a thousand houses in this village, the largest one among the Meo villages. Most of the houses are made of brown wood, giving them a special look on the mountain’s slope. The village is built within a valley. Houses are scattered on the slopes of mountains from both sides. A river crosses the two parts of the village. You can cross it by walking on one of the wind and rain bridges, typical to Meo villages of the province. Beautiful rice terraces are all around the area. There are a couple of possibilities to tour Xijiang – in the center of the village located at the bottom of the valley, climbing the southern slope or climbing the northern slope, where mose rice terraces are.

I left the hotel in Kaili with my huge bag in order to travel from Kaili to Xijiang and directly to Congjiang. Since there was no bus connecting the two, I had to take a bus from Kaili to Xijiang (two hours), go back to Kaili by bus and take another bus to Congjiang. Leishan is somewhere on the way, and the bus from Kaili to Congjiang stops in Leishan on its way. To make a little shortcut, instead of going on the bus directly to Xijiang, I took the bus from Kaili to Leishan (13 yuan, one hour and a half), I left my huge bag in luggage storage (there is no such thing in Leishan. It was left in the ticket lady’s office) for 4 yuan a day, and went on another bus from Leishan to Xijiang leaving at 14:30 (10 yuan, one hour).

After spending half a day in Xijian village I went on a bus for a long trip of thousands of steep curves between Leishan and Congjiang. Only after the bus has arrived in Rongjiang, the curves calmed a little. Overall it was a five and half hours in a minibus.

At 10:00 in the morning I walked out the hostel to investigate the Southern, less interesting side of Xijiang. A few art students sit on the mountain’s slope. They came here to practice their expertise. The brown wooden houses, so typical to Xijiang are seen everywhere. I climbed for fifteen minutes from the village till I reached the main road. This is where tourist groups come on buses to watch the view of the village and the river crossing it. The village is covered with fog during the day. It’s not easy to take a picture from a distance.

Congjiang. I woke up at 10:00. Having intentions to stay another day in the hostel, I packed a small bag and went to the reception to pay for the next day. The reception lady gave me the deposit I paid the night before for the key (10 yuan). She refused that I stay another day.

It seemed a little odd so Insisted on staying. Then the owner of the place came in and told me this is not a hotel so I cannot stay any more days. Since my Mandarin was not good enough to understand what they wanted, I left the place. They pointed towards a nearby hotel (an expensive one). Another hostel look-alike refused to give me a room as well. The official hotels for tourists are expensive so instead of sleeping in Congjiang, I headed to Basha village, located ten kilometers from the city. This village is known as a hunters village still dressing and working like they did in old times.

I left my huge bag in the bus station of Congjiang (4 yuans per day). There’s no direct bus to Basha, so to get get there you have to take the minivan (30 yuan) or a motorcycle (20 yuan). I settled with a local motorbike driver for 15 yuan and we were on our way to Basha.

Basha village is on a mountain top 20 minutes drive from the city. There are numerous hostels. I entered one of them called Guns Group. Room pricing with showers is 60 yuans. There is a 3-bed dormitory for 20 yuan (per bed). If you get lucky the room will be completely empty.

זהו סוף חודש אוקטובר ומזג האוויר לא טוב. השמיים מעוננים והראות לא טובה במיוחד. ערפל כיסה את הנוף המרוחק והיה קשה לצלם. הטרסות נראו עלובות, השדות שוממים מכיוון שהתבואה נאספה אך לא מזמן.

וכך מצאתי את עצמי מגיע למקום באחת התקופות הגרועות ביותר לביקור בלונגשנג.

יצאתי בשעה אחת עשרה בבוקר לטרק רגלי מהכפר פינגאן אל הטרסות של ג’ינקנג. בג’ינקנג יש כמה כפרים קטנים שבסופם נמצאת תחנת האוטובוסים, דרכה אפשר לחזור אל פינגאן (יש לקחת שני אוטובוסים).

בסמוך למלון הקטן שבו התאכסנתי רכשתי מקל הליכה טלסקופי. הוא לא היה קצר ולמעשה די ארוך. כאן המקום לציין כי יש כמה סוגים של מקלות הליכה מתקפלים. השימושי ביותר הוא זה שלא תופס הרבה מקום. המחיר, לעומת זאת, היה זול כל כך שלא יכולתי לסרב, בסך הכל 20 יואן (כעשרה שקלים). זה המחיר הזול ביותר שמצאתי עבור מקל הליכה. זה לא המחיר לצרכן והוא הושג לאחר מיקוח לא קל, וממילא תכננתי לזרוק אותו מאוחר יותר בשל אורכו.

התחלתי בצעידה מההוסטל הקטן, ופניתי ימינה במגרש החניה של הרכבים. משם מתחיל הטיפוס. כדאי לזכור שהתחלתי את הטרק מנקודת הכניסה לאתר הנמוכה, ולא מאזור המלונות הנמצאים במעלה ההר. רוב המלונות והאזור התיירותי נמצאים במרחק של עשרים וחמש דקות הליכה מהכניסה לאתר.
