Entrance fees to Angkor Wat sites are very expensive. One day ticket costs $20 USD, For three days you have to pay $40 USD and a ticket for the entire week costs $60 USD.
Transportation in Siem Reap
The second shock after the expensive prices that the budget traveler gets is that you can’t rent a motorcycle because the police doesn’t let anyone. This leaves the tourists to the mercy of the tuktuk and motorcycle-taxi drivers.
One day fee for a motorcycle taxi varies between $6 to $8 for getting to the close temples, and can reach up to 20$ to 25$ for the far away temples. A tuktuk costs a little more but more people can share it at the same time. Tuktuks in Siem Reap are different than those in Thailand. While in Bangkok the tuktuks are a complete vehicle with an engine, in Siem Reap the tuktuks are some sort of a wagon connected to a regular motorcycle.
First day at Angkor Wat
On the first day I drove with a motorcycle taxi to a temple 37 kilometers away from Siem Reap and to some other far away temples. On this dubious pleasure I paid $18. It’s not fun sitting on the back of a motorcycle in the extreme Cambodian heat. It’s recommended to take a tuktuk for these kind of rides. The Angkor Wat arena is literally huge. Beside every temple are stands in which you can buy T-shirts and drinks, as well as souvenirs. Almost everywhere you can see kids selling postcards and counterfeit books of Lonely Planet. As for the temples, they are simply amazing. In this case a picture worth one thousand words although it’s much better when you’re actually there.
