סין החרימה את מדריך לונלי פלאנט לסין, מהי האלטרנטיבה?~China Banned Lonely Planet To China. Is There An Alternative?

My tour to China is getting closer, so I started checking about guidebooks to China. The latest edition of Lonely Planet to China was published in May 2007 (Lonely Planet to China 2007 Edition). I read some reviews about it, which led me to believe it’s not such an amazing book. It’s heavy, containing over one thousand pages (after all, China is big as the Entire Europe). The most disturbing rumor was that China banned this book. Some of the rumors I read were referring to the way Tibet or Taiwan are described as parts which do not belong to China. To make things short, it’s a lot of boring politics.

There are already stories of travelers who got their Lonely Planet confiscated. I read a recommendation to rip the map of China from the first pages of the book, or simply wrap it with a brown paper so it will not be recognized. Meanwhile I started looking for alternatives. China is a country in which attractions and places are changing pretty fast, thus the information might become irrelevant in a short period of time. The alternative for Lonely Plant to China is the Rough Guide to China. Its last edition got some warm recommendations. The best thing is the next edition is going to be published in May 2008 (Rough Guide to China 2008 Edition). So here is a good alternative if you don’t want to risk your book being confiscated in a critical stage of your journey.

As of today, it’s no longer a rumor. According to the website Vagabondish, the Chinese government approved it banned the book since it shows China and Tibet as two different countries.
